Samaná
We have the best places to see in Samaná, one of the most beautiful provinces of the Dominican Republic. Knowing Santa Barbara de Samaná, visiting paradises such as Frontón beach, swimming in the turquoise waters of the famous Bacardi Island, hallucinating with humpback whales or visiting the Natural Park of Los Haitises are some of the things to see and do in Samaná that will leave you with your mouth open.
To the north of the Dominican Republic is the Samana Peninsula, one of the greenest areas of the country, which is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic. A place that has not yet been invaded by mass tourism, but that is increasingly discovered by more travelers looking to visit virgin beaches.
The Samana Peninsula offers numerous attractions, so we have prepared a guide with the best places to see in Samaná so that you can make the most of your trip. Let’s get started!
The best places to see in Samaná (Dominican Republic)
The Samaná Peninsula is home to a large number of tourist attractions, so we recommend you spend between 5 or 6 days to visit it calmly.
We only had 3 days but we made the most of them from sunrise to sunset.
This was the itinerary of our visit to Samaná:
- The first day we visited Las Galeras, Playa Frontón and Playa Rincón.
- The second we visited Monte Rojo, Santa Bárbara de Samaná and El Valle.
- The third we did an excursion to see the humpback whales and Cayo Levantado.
If we had had more days, the fourth would have been dedicated to seeing the Salto del Limón and Playa Ermitaño; the fifth Los Haitises and the sixth the area of Las Terrenas.
Santa Barbara de Samana
The capital of Samaná is a very pleasant city to which it is worth dedicating half a day to know its main tourist attractions.
Taking a walk along the boardwalk and taking a picture with the colorful letters of “Samaná”, seeing the colorful houses of the Pueblo Bahia Principe or touring the pedestrian bridge that connects several keys are some of the essential things to do in Samaná.
Las Galeras, the most virgin area to see in Samaná
North of Samaná is the small town of Las Galeras, a typical Dominican fishing village where you will find a few restaurants for dinner and some shops.
Las Galeras is one of the essential places to see in Samaná, because it has a very pleasant beach from where the boats depart that will take you to the paradisiacal Playa Frontón and Playa Madama.
Playa Frontón, the most beautiful beach to see in Samaná
Playa Frontón is one of the most beautiful beaches to see in Samaná and probably in the world, a beach surrounded by huge black rocks and jungle, with spectacular turquoise water and endless sloping palm trees.
To get there you will have to take a boat from Las Galeras, which will cost you about 30 dollars per person. They usually leave around 9-9.30 h (or when the boats are full) and it is a journey of about 30 minutes.
If it is very windy or the sea is very choppy we recommend you not to do it, because we did not pay attention to the recommendations that had been given to us at the hotel and it was the worst trip of our lives. We were really scared.
Playa Rincón, a paradisiacal beach to see in Samaná
About 2o minutes from Las Galeras by car is Playa Rincón, another paradisiacal beach to see in Samaná where you will not find anyone if you go in the afternoon.
The beach is very long, about 5 kilometers long, and only at the end of it there is a part with hammocks and several beach bars.
The road to get there is good and, in some sections, has a spectacular landscape. Although if you do not have a car, you can also reach it by boat from Las Galeras.
