Tarragona
Tarragona is synonymous with history. More than two thousand years ago, Tarraco was founded by the Romans. Exactly in 218 B.C. Since then, each historical period has left its mark on the city. You can walk through many centuries of history just by crossing a few streets. The Roman amphitheatre: built in the 2nd century AD. and with a capacity of about 14,000 spectators.
It was used for gladiator and wild beast fights, even for executions. Currently, a large part of the stands and the arena have been preserved. The Cathedral of Santa Tecla: you will find it in the upper part of the city, on the ruins of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus. From square to square: three squares with fragments of the past. In the Plaza del Fòrum was the Roman forum. Today, you will still be able to see a good part of one of the walls. A large esplanade occupies the Plaza de la Font, which was formerly the center of the Roman circus. Finally, the Plaza del Rey is the headquarters of the Praetorium tower and the National Archaeological Museum.
El Serrallo: this old fishermen’s neighborhood is perfect for taking a walk and eating fresh fish or good rice. La Rambla Nova and the Balcón del Mediterráneo: this street is a real surprise. It has more than 150 years of history and is full of shops, restaurants and bars. You will also find photogenic sculptures such as the Castellers and the mythical Font dels Elefants. It ends at the Balcón del Mediterráneo, a viewpoint 40 meters high to contemplate the Roman amphitheatre, the port and even go down to the sea. Step by step, you will feel how you travel in time.
