House of the Guayabera.
The guayaberas are masculine garments, shirts with short or long sleeves. Adorned with vertical tucks, and sometimes with embroidery. They have pockets on the chest and on the skirts. They are manufactured mostly in cotton and linen fabrics. According to the legend, a Sancti Spiritus peasant asked his wife to make him a comfortable shirt to work with. The lady fulfilled the order without knowing that it was going to become popular. The first denomination was “yayabera”, by the Yayabo river. But the peasants used to collect guavas and keep them in their pockets, so they changed the name to guayabera.
This new museum pays homage to this emblematic shirt. It displays guayaberas by Hugo Chávez, Gabriel García Márquez and Fidel Castro. It has an evocative patio by the river in front of the famous bridge of the city. It also has a patio and a beautiful garden that hosts social and cultural events.
